You have seen sunrise in kanchenjungha many a times but have you ever seen full moon disappearing behind kanchenjunga just before that?
You may have stayed in Orange orchard many a times but have you ever seen orange trees beside the roads with countless orange falling beneath it making a orange bed and no one to pick them up?
You may have visited a beach with white sand beside the sea but have you ever seen a beach of white sand 5000 feet above sea level?
You may have stayed in five star hotels and fine homestays but have you ever stayed in a place where you have to bid farewell from the homestay owner with a heavy heart and Misty eyes and a commitment deep inside you that you will always be friends and remember him through out your life?
Dear Karma thank you for showing me all these, It would really be very very tough for me to forget these mesmerizing views and sweet sweet memories. It's another world!
Where to start on my experience in Dzongu? Well, first of all I arrived in Mangan with the idea of gaining my permit, finding a homestay and then travelling to Dzongu. I called around homestays in Dzongu looking for a place to stay and was recommended Rumlyang Homestay and was given Karmas (the owner) number.
I quickly called Karma who told me he was in Mangan at the time and would meet me in twenty minutes. I waited and then as informed, Karma was outside my hotel within twenty minutes to meet and greet me, and then kindly recommended me a spot to go for lunch. As we sat we discussed what we could get upto whilst I stayed at his in Dzongu and what I needed to do to get my permit (which was VERY easy as Karma took photos of my documents and done all the hard work for me). He told me he would meet me tomorrow at the same time and his brother could give me & him a lift into Dzongu.
Fast forward to the homestay. Karmas home is far from the road in Tingvong and truly amongst nature as you'll wake up hearing bird calls, being surrounded by wild plants (buckwheat, wild ferns, nettle) & veg and also with an avocado tree right in front of his house (unfortunately wasn't bearing fruit at the time... next time though!)
Karma was extremely hospitable, he really couldn't do enough to ensure I had a fun, exciting & authentic experience during my time in Dzongu. As we explored the villages, waterfall and rivers we stopped at the sight of any wild plant that we could pick and cook for our dinner! As we cooked our dinner he shown me how to prepare and cook the dishes we ate, also explaining to me the medicinal properties of some of the food.
I really felt like I was at home stood in the kitchen alongside Karma who was just like a big brother to me: showing me cooking-tips, laughing and joking and telling stories as we sat and ate. Karma is very open to any questions about Lepcha people, culture and also current affairs and made it easy for me to get as deep of an understanding as I could during my 3 night stay.
Without a doubt I would recommend this homestay to anyone. Karma is very kind and always looking to ensure you're getting the most out of your time in Dzongu.
Very sad to leave this place. Dzongu really is another world for many reasons - and you'll only ever fully understand this once you've been there and stayed within a homestay like Rumlyang.
