Description

The Jamaica Licensed Electricians Association is a non-profit organization formed in the year 2013; to represent the interest and welfare of licensed electricians in Jamaica. It will also be working with other stake holders and interest group on electrical and energy matters in Jamaica.

The Electric Lighting Act makes it mandatory for all electrical work carried out in Jamaica to be done by a licensed electrician. The association main objective is to ensure all electrical work done in Jamaica is done according to the stipulation of the Electric Lighting Act, the government standard, all applicable codes and regulations thereof. The safety of the public is of paramount importance; the association will monitor all electrical work and ensure it is safe and won’t pose any danger to life and property and its content.

The public should ensure their electrical projects are done by licensed electricians; all licensed electricians should present a valid electrical license and a notice form when conducting business with the public. Information on licensed electricians and other matters concerning electrical work should be address to the association, government electrical inspectorate, Board of Electricians Examiner or the Ministry of Mining and Energy.

There are over 800 practicing licensed electricians in Jamaica, they are licensed by the board of electrical examiners and monitored by the government electrical inspectorate. Both of these agencies fall under the Ministry of Mining and Energy. All licensed electricians have to sit an oral and written examination and have a minimum of five years practical experience; about 30 percent are engineers with qualification ranging from bachelors to doctorate.

Renewable energy and energy conservation and protection of the environment are issues the association will be playing an active and proactive role in. It is also our aim to assist licensed electricians and other electricians with training and personal development.
